TANGO!

I just got back form the Gotan Project gig and it was amazing.
Makes me want to learn how to dance to tango, properly, not the way we rehearsed and learned it for prom more than a decade ago... I will just have to convince Eddi that he wants to learn it too, as you know, it does take two...

Oh, it's so hard to dance tango!! My Jack and I tried to learn last time we were in Buenos Aires. We went to several places where they teach tango, but the best place everto watch real people dance real tango is at San Telmo. There they have many "vintage stores" and once a week (every sunday) there's this huge outdoors market where theysell everykind of vintage stuff and in the middle of the market there's a public square where people gather to dance... I'll send some pics through Ina so you can understand what I'm saying.

It's wonderfull! I hope we can bring you bitties down here and we can "strech" the trip to Buenos Aires... oh, what a dream, that would be great, wouldn't it?!

I have Epoca on my playlist! There's social-style Tango (which I teach) and Argentinian Tango (which I've always wanted to learn!).

But of course you must learn to dance Argentine Tango! And then it´s also advisable to go on " tangocamps ", they basically are courses with incredible teachers from all over the world, not to mention we have some astounding teachers also in Finland. In Helsinki, try to find one who´s called " Arto ".
Come to think of it, you already have the flair that it requires, and fishnets to suit the style.

Oh, I'm jealous. But then, I got to see... errr, listen to, some pretty great tango musicians too, just last Friday. You do have to try and learn Argentine (or Finnish, I guess) tango, it is completely different from the ballroom tango you learn as a young one...

Cheers,
poet

Stephanie : My friend lived in Buneos Aires last year (and is on her way back now) and told me about the outdoor dancing. Of course I knew about tango and Argentina but I didn't really know it was that strong, as the way she described it. And yes please send some pics :) I hope the Bitties in Latin America will work out!!!! <3

Mary Ann : Yes, I'm also thinking Argentinian tango :) Tango is pretty big in Finland, many finns go to argentina to dance. But I think by nature (in general) Finns do have the melancholy, but lack the passion that Argentinean people have, so it's not of course the same thing over here. This of course only on a common level.

Weird Rock Star : Yes i know, it shouldn't be hard to find classes over here I think. Time for those of course, is a whole different thing... But I think camps or workshops would be easier to participate in than weekly classes, since we dance lindy on a weekly basis.

Poet : Yes, Finnish tango also differs from ballroom tango!

Marie : oh yes, it can be very confusing in the beginning to first learn the followers steps and then have to be the leader. The teacher should have just let you dance with the shorter guys instead... although, on a long term basis one would get pretty much advantage of knowing both how to lead and how to follow I guess.

I'm actually Argentinian (from Buenos Aires) living now in London for about 6 years now and every time I hear Tango (classic or modern) it makes me feel totally homesick. It's funny because when I was back there I never thought anything about tango other than..it's mainly for tourists.
And no, I don't know how to dance tango..it takes years and years to master the art of tango but maybe one day...who knows.
Love your blog.

Great song! I too would love to learn tango (any type to begin with), but as you say finding time for it (that would suit both me and my partner) is kinda tricky. Good luck convincing Eddi!

Well, dearest.
If you already dance lindy, you might know Arto from there. The blonde skinny thing.
And a tangocamp would be a good idea, especially as you get started. It gives you concentrated amount of wisdom with limited time. Plus you´ll get so see some of the advanced dancers strut their stuff too.
Gotan Project is NOT pure Argentine Tango, it´s show version of Tango. But it is wildly delightful! A little panache is never a bad thing.

Hej!

Mvh, Lucia
